StartUp Britain is a national campaign by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, harnessing the expertise and passion of Britain’s leading businesspeople to celebrate, inspire and accelerate enterprise in the UK.
The campaign was founded by eight entrepreneurs and launched on 28th March 2011 by the Prime Minister, with the full support of the Chancellor and HM Government, although it is completely funded by our private-sector sponsors (BT Business, Dell, Intel, Intuit, Iris and PayPal).
How do we do this?
We are truly passionate about promoting entrepreneurship and its benefits to our economy and we do this by highlighting the myriad of support that is available to those who wish to start or grow a business, galvanising support where we see a demand and by acting as a voice for small businesses to Government.
This is a response from the private sector to the Government’s call for an ‘enterprise-led’ recovery.
So what's happened since we launched?
- Immediately following the launch of the campaign, Experian reported a spike of 25% in people searching for the term 'start up' online.
- We held Marketing and Tech4StartUp Britain Weeks, providing a week's worth of free events for start-ups and growing businesses. Since then we have also held a Finance4StartUp Britain Week and in total over 15,000 people have attended or watched our events. Over 90% of delegates believed that the events would take them one step closer to starting or growing a business.
- Enterprising individuals approached us willing to set up StartUp Local campaigns in their own area. As such, we now have over 70 StartUp Local champions running StartUp Campaigns across the country, showcasing great things for those looking to start or grow a business in their local area.
- Our Summer Bus Tour took us on a 1236-mile journey across the country, providing direct access to the support start-up and growing businesses need most. Over 2500 people boarded the bus to receive advice from experts and successful entrepreneurs.
- Through working with great organisations such as The Supper Club, over 1600 hours of mentoring have been matched to young startups. The mentees estimate they will create a total of over 550 new jobs in one year as a result of their mentoring. 85% believed that the mentoring they received will help them grow their business faster.
- The campaign has also inspired further initiatives, including StartUp Saturday and similar international campaigns across the globe. In March 2012 we brought together the international campaigns, including StartUp America, StartUp Canada and StartUp Chile to share ideas and work together on supporting the global economy.
- In January 2012 we launched our Enterprise Calendar, which now contains over 800 events designed to help start or grow a business. Our marketplace also displays the offers and links that thousands of you have uploaded to support others to start or grow their own business.
- With the help of many entrepreneurs, small business owners and investors, we prepared an Entrepreneurs' Budget and submitted this to Government. The budget paper contains ideas ranging from encouraging investment in start-ups and growth businesses to reducing burdens on the founders of companies.
- We have also worked with Government on practical initiatives based on your feedback. In January we launched the Business in You media campaign with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which resulted in billboards and radio adverts featured across the country to encourage people to take a leap and start a business. In May we helped launch StartUp Loans, a project that will provide anybody aged 18-24 with a loan of up to £2500 to start a business.
- More recently we have announced serial-entrepreneur Luke Johnson as the campaign chairman and launched StartUp Spaces, a platform for start-ups and growing businesses to find start-up friendly space providers in their local area.
But we're not stopping there! 2013 will see some of our most exciting projects yet.
